Youth Brass Band Camps

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH BRASS BAND CAMP
July 12-16, 2021
W.K. Kellogg Auditorium

Back in-person for Summer 2021! Rehearse and perform side-by-side in the historic W.K. Kellogg Auditorium with BBBC resident conductor Michael Garasi and world-class artists from the Brass Band of Battle Creek!

Activities and Information:

  • Conducted by BBBC Resident Conductor Michael Garasi and BBBC Education Director Jerry Rose.
  • Monday through Friday, July 12-16
  • Daily rehearsals, sectionals, master classes, and Q&A with BBBC musicians.
  • Open to brass and percussion players in grades 8-12 (graduating 2021 seniors are welcome to participate!)
  • Delicious catered meal provided each day.
  • Custom BBBC masks and bell covers provided for each participant. Social distancing and other protocols will be followed according to health department/school district recommendations.
  • Free end-of-camp public performance on Friday, July 16 at 6:30pm. Parents and family members are encouraged to attend.

Cost and financial aid:

  • $50 per student for all five days, including meals, instruction, camp t-shirt, and PPE
  • Scholarships/financial aid available to all Calhoun County students.

MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH BRASS BAND CAMP
July 19-21, 2021
Marshall High School

New for this summer! – A 3-day experience designed to introduce middle school brass and percussion students to the joy of playing in a brass band, led by players and staff from the world- renowned Brass Band of Battle Creek.

Activities and Information:

  • Conducted by BBBC Artist Demondrae Thurman and BBBC Education Director Jerry Rose
  • July 19-21 (Monday through Wednesday) at Marshall High School
  • Fun music! Sectionals, rehearsals, skill sessions, and side-by-side performance with BBBC musicians.
  • Delicious catered meal and snacks provided each day.
  • 9am to 4pm Monday and Tuesday, Noon-7pm Wednesday
  • Supportive, low-pressure environment designed for students with 1 to 3 years of playing experience.
  • Daily bus transportation provided from Battle Creek and Albion (as needed)
  • Custom BBBC masks and bell covers provided for each participant. Social distancing and other protocols will be followed according to health department/school district recommendations.
  • Free end-of-camp public performance on Wednesday, July 21 at 6:30pm. Parents and family members are encouraged to attend.

2021 Camp Conductors

Michael Garasi (High School)- Hailing from Belton, Texas,  Michael Garasi possesses extraordinary stage charisma and ease of connection with both students and audiences. With an intuitive and instinctive understanding of and passion for music, Mr. Garasi is one of the most engaging and exciting professional conductors of our day.

Demondrae Thurman (Middle School)- BBBC artist Demondrae Thurman has an outstanding international reputation as a euphonium soloist, having performed in Europe, Asia, and throughout North America. Many of America’s premier colleges and universities have hosted him as a performer and teacher, and he continues to be in high demand. His energetic and positive demeanor on the podium inspires musicians of all ages.

The seminar faculty is selected from the all-star membership roster of the renowned Brass Band of Battle Creek. Each faculty member is a master teacher in addition to being recognized as a leading brass or percussion performing artist. Many of our faculty are professors at highly-regarded university music schools, while others are outstanding freelance musicians or perform with the world’s best professional bands and orchestras.
